A faculty member at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, Shannon Gibney, received a formal reprimand for her handling of a discussion about structural racism in her Introduction to Mass Communication course.

According to Gibney in an interview with City College News, a white male student asked her, “Why do we have to talk about this in every class? Why do we have to talk about this?”

She claims she was shocked, because “[h]is whole demeanor was very defensive. He was taking it personally. I tried to explain, of course, in a reasonable manner — as reasonable as I could given the fact that I was being interrupted and put on the spot in the middle of class — that this is unfortunately the context of 21st century America.”

Gibney says another white male student followed the first, saying “Yeah, I don’t get this either. It’s like people are trying to say that white men are always the villains, the bad guys. Why do we have to say this?”

When Gibney attempted, again, to inform the students that they were mistaking a systemic critique for a personal attack, the students continued to argue. Eventually, she told them that “if you’re really upset, feel free to go down to legal affairs and file a racial harassment discrimination complaint.” This is exactly what they did.

Gibney is familiar with white male students taking discussions about structural racism as personal attacks, as it has happened before: in a 2009 incident, an editor of the school newspaper took offense at a similar discussion. In both that case and this one, Gibney received an official reprimand. After the latest accusation, the Vice President of Academic Affairs appended a letter to her file, in which he said he found it “it troubling that the manner in which you led a discussion on the very important topic of of structural racism alienated two students who may have been most in need of learning about this subject.”

“While I believe it was your intention to discuss structural racism generally,” he continued, “it was inappropriate for you to single out white male students in class. Your actions in [targeting] select students based on their race and gender caused them embarrassment and created a hostile learning environment.”

Gibney told lawyers at an investigatory meeting for an anti-discrimination lawsuit she and six other professors are filling against MCTC that the vice president’s words “have helped those three white male students succeed in undermining my authority as one of the few remaining black female professors here.”

Watch Gibney’s explanation of the incident below.

AFRICAN AMERICA IS AT WAR

THERE IS A RACE WAR ON AFRICAN AMERICA

THERE IS A RACE WAR ON AFRICAN AMERICANS

THERE IS A RACE WAR ON BLACK PEOPLE IN AMERICA

AMERICA'S RACISTS HAVE INFILTRATED AMERICAN POLICE FORCES TO WAGE A RACE WAR AGAINST BLACK PEOPLE IN AMERICA

THE BLACK RACE IS AT WAR

FIRST WORLD WAR:  THE APPROXIMATELY 6,000 YEAR WORLD WAR ON AFRICA AND THE BLACK RACE

Original Post

so we can't even discuss racism...that is of course unless we are talking about how Rosa Parks ended it...or something like that

What's the USE of being a TEACHER...if you can't DISCUSS truth.  Fact is, racism is REAL.  And it's the TRUTH? . I remember I turned in a teacher years ago who would not teach a portion of the slave trade cuz it minimized or dehumanized white folks hero IMAGE.  He just cut it out-saying he didn't have enough time.  Bullshyte.  He was showing slides of subjects that had absolutely NOTHING to do with colonialism,  And he was a HISTORY teacher! But who was told that they were being unreasonable and needed to give this teacher room to teach in his style?  ME!!  I was informed just that and I'ma gonna tell ya...from that point on?  I taught my way too.  So it happens.  And it happens in school districts that you think it wouldn't never ever happen-especially where there's a black principle running the school.  But! .  Every teacher [throughout the nation] has a basic curriculum they must follow....however this teacher didn't and he was not only given a pass but a PRAISE[mainly cuz he was white] of being creative.  Again.bull.....shyte!  But

The professor is now being reprimanded. That is structural racism!

Hmmm, she’s right but it sounds like she lost her role and relational cool in the mix, maybe helped bring it on by head banging students and directly challenging them to complain. Better ways to teach.

". . . an anti-discrimination lawsuit she and six other professors are filling against MCTC . . ."

I'm glad that she and other teachers are challenging this school's ignorant, and evidently biased, conclusion.

If people are going to teach history [or Social Studies Courses], they need to teach the TRUTH, not fictitious or redacted versions of history.  If these students are "offended" by 'structural racism' being discussed, then maybe they should drop the class and take something else instead.

It is actually 'structural racism' that they could even file a "discrimination" lawsuit based on what they personally prefer not be discussed in the class anyway. Unless there is something I am missing, there is nothing this teacher has said or did or taught that even falls under the grounds for any claim of discrimination in the first place. With that said, if they actually win ANYTHING resembling a discrimination lawsuit, it will set the precedence for Black people win the countless lawsuits they could file based on how they feel about how Black people are and have been portrayed in history/social studies, etc., classes, all over this country, for decades [centuries/forever].

It goes without saying you don't see any basis because there isn't anything there to see.

That said, it should not be lost that all of this comes on the fear that is usually associated with the discussion of history on our part. What people in this country are starting to come face to face with the fact that there is no way around the ugly history or the thinking that fuels it.

This was addressed in the video I posted about PTSS..

White males feel targeted and "oppressed" when their discomfort isn't a concern over the discussion of what is historically and uncontested truth.  This is even subdivided under the language of "anti american-ism".

And of course there's the issue of academic freedom.  Smaller institutions have less to fight back with.....

She doesn't have a problem with white males except when they insist on (angrily) disrupting her lecture. The white males have a problem with her discussing a system that works to their great benefit.

Could this situation have been handled better? Yes. The college should have known that the topic would be too sensitive for the 'delicate' ears of some. It should have anticipated the reaction from some students and had a plan to address it when it arose. The college allows her to teach that particular topic but fails to show her any support when students complain about the content? The college failed Professor Gibney. Yes, Professor Gibney could have handled the situation better but so could have the college. The disruptive students ended up being rewarded for their poor behavior. SMH

I saw this comment posted below the video, which further proves structural racism does exist. Their entire perception of actual history is completely warped.

Tom Johnson:
It's time for white people around the world to stand up for themselves. Our nations are being flooded with non white parasites that rob, rape, and murder our people while we get to pay for it! Our birthrates are well below replacement level and the jewish infiltrators of our governments and media revel in our ethnic cleansing. It is either stand up for our children's future or be too afraid to be called "racist", a word that can mean anything and nothing. What will it be white people??

Factual History: European 'parasites' flooded non-Caucasian nations around the world and raped, robbed, murdered, enslaved, and bombed. They abducted African people and brought them to their 'nations' to be their slaves. Whose fault is that? If they don't like it then they can send each of us back to Africa (comfortably!) with one hundred million dollars (tax free). For many years, our ancestors begged to go home. Here's their chance to make things right. But they aren't going to do that. They are an extremely insecure people. Their only method of succeeding is at our expense. They are incapable of feeling good about themselves unless they are looking down on someone else.

Their home is Europe, not the Americas, not Asia, not the islands of the Pacific (including Australia) or any of the oceans, not Greenland, not Antarctica, and certainly not Africa. If they want us to leave Europe then fine.We will leave after they have vacated our lands. Vacated as in they can't take anything belonging to our lands with them when they leave. We will see how prosperous Europe will be when it no longer has the precious minerals, metals, and oil it covets and robs from other nations. Europe would be a third world nation in a short time. And there would still be crime (robbery, rape, and murder) in Europe like there has always been (long before any nonwhites made an appearance).

It's not our fault their birthrate is declining. It's their own fault. The underlying issue is that they have always hated the fact that they have always been a minority on this planet and always will. Their declining numbers also mean that, soon, they will no longer have power and influence over the rest of the world (nonwhite). As a people, they are doomed. They see the writing on the wall and it scares the living daylights out of them.

We should stop being afraid of them. Wake up and rise up!

Exactly! If they can file a discrimination lawsuit for hearing the truth about their inhumane system then we can file a class action discrimination lawsuit every time they make harmful stereotypical references or say anything negative about us as a people. We could start by filing a discrimination lawsuit against the legislative system. We would be very wealthy in a short time. LOL
