Black Comedians And The "War On Terror"

I swear, if I see another Black comedian buck dance for this "War on Terror", I think I'm going to snap! upset

I watch Comedy Central a lot (I'm kind of forced to, it's one of the only half-way descent channels I can get up here at Frostburg State University), and often times on standup specials, when Black comedians come on, they address the "War on Terror". What ticks me off is almost all of them (well, all that I can remember) seem to be against the War, yet they seem to try and justify it.

They make jokes about Arabs being "terrorists", and what really pisses me off is that many Black comedians joke, with a certain smugness, that they partially glad for the War on Terror and racial profiling of Arabs and Arab-Americans because "it takes the focus off of Black people"; or more commonly, "They're looking for Osama nowdays and not me!" This pisses me off because the logic is like this: A bully at school used to beat you up everyday after school. One day, he beats up on another kid instead of you. You are so happy that he has left you alone for once, that you run in and help him beat up this kid who has done nothing to you, in a pathetic attempt to get on the bully's "good side". upset


What frustrates me even more is that the audience is almost always mostly White, and they of course grin widely and clap loudly, and we all know why. Because a Minority is supporting them and giving them the green light to discriminate against another non-White group. Hispanic-American comedian Carlos Mencia pissed me off because he justified racial profiling of Arabs (who he commonly refers to as a collective person "Achmed") as "hazing". He claimed that Minorities (including non-Anglo Saxxon Whites) in America have always been picked on, and that Arabs should have to go through this "phase of hazing" just like other non-Whites. The White audience of course applauded uproariously.


Not only is this is a disgusting support of White racism (and imperialism) under the logic of "Whatever, it ain't me", I also sense that it's an attempt at Buck-Dancing dance for White folks. It appears to be a thinly-veiled attempt at trying to cozy up to Massa as a House Negro by decrying everyone he decries and giving him implicit support. It always feels as if these Black comedians are trying to suck up to the White audience.


Has anyone else noticed this with a lot of Black comedians after September 11th? nono

I see your point, EP. I may have to disagree with you because many Arabs (and South Asians) before 9/11 didn't care that much about neither Blacks nor Latinos.

In fact, many Arabs hated to be lumped with Blacks and Latinos, especially Latinos because Arabs and Latinos are both "Brown" people.

I hate to say it, but a lot of non-black minorities have been saying "At least it ain't me" for a lot of years, because many (not all) of them have been jocking for positions on the racial totem pole in America, trying to get as close to white as possible, and unfortunately the quickest way is to hate black folks and assist in putting as many obstacles as possible to keep us from surpassing them (which keeps up the "model minority" stereotype going).

Don't get me wrong, though. Whiteness is the ultimate race bully. But many of these so-called browns and other "model minorities" are playing flunkies (bullies-in-training [i.e. B-I-Tches]) for those bullies, who are helping out to bully other POC so they won't get their asses kicked. They've been "buck-dancing" for years.

And many black comedians talk about 9/11 and the War on Terror on BET's Comic View, which is mostly a black audience. Are they buck-dancing, too?

The bottom line is this: everyone is all for racial profiling, as long as they or their race aren't the ones being profiled.

Every other immigrant ethnicity has done the same thing to greate or lesser degrees.

The bottom line is this: everyone is all for racial profiling, as long as they or their race aren't the ones being profiled.---Huey

And that is the sad truth of truths.

I have to agree that it still hurts to see it being done by 'our' comedians, and others 'with voice'.

That's really good.

In "my" neighborhood, a group of arab, latin and asian businessmen, have put up a chain of 99cent type stores; and that's all you will see working in these stores. No problem, except, now when you (African American) go in to shop, you have the asian,latin,arab security forces following you. Confused

I'll have to look up some documented cases, but I remember a case that I experienced personally very well. When I was 9 years old, I was visiting relatives in Cincinatti. I was taking a bus (I think it was a bus) and I remember two Asian ladies came onto the bus and sat in the seats in front of two Black women. I remember overhearing the Black women talking to each other about "Damn chinks" and saying stuff like, "Why do they continue to let these damn immigrants into the country? Like they don't have enough of these dinks as it is." Then they started giggling to each other making mock "ching-chong" noises. When one of the ladies finally turned around and asked them to stop, one the Black ladies scowled, and the other told the Asian lady to "mind your damn business, I'm not talking to you".

I also remember other occasions when I was in high school of non-White kids talking about each other and getting into fights over race. One fight started when a Hispanic kid accidently bumped into a Black kid, and the Black kid shoved him into a locker and his friend called the guy a "bean-muncher".


I'm not saying that we are more racist against them, of course not. Nor am I saying that some of our angst against other Minorities is not justified. I'm just saying that racism is not a one-way street. Both sides have reason for angst (some other Minorities may see Black business as a threat to the livelihood of their own businesses), but what does it solve at the end of the day? The only beneficiary out of this whole dillemma are 50-year old rich White men.

Seriously, what should Minorities do? Start a race war? Continue senseless gang wars in the inner-cities? Start racial supremacy groups against one another? I'm all for Black Nationalism, but I don't agree with Black Seperatism. I think it's just an attempt to apply elements of White Nationalism to Black Consciousness.

Black Seperatism wouldn't accomplish much, alone, the African-American race is not powerful enough to successfully put down White Hegemony. NO Minority group is. Whites still outnumber Blacks 4:1. But, together, Minorities make up 40% of this nation's population (Whites only make up 60% by themselves).


I think coalitions and vanguard parties are the best option we have. What are our other options? "Go it alone"? What if we somehow did, by the Grace of God succeed and usurp White hegemony? What about all those non-White people we ascended above? Wouldn't we have just effectively become the new "The Man"? What's to ensure we wouldn't just replace White Hegemony with Black Hegemony? Historically, oppressed groups that replace dominant groups usually just end up becoming the new victimizers. We could have Black Seperatism, but that would just eventually led to race wars (there is no way you can segregate yourself in a heterogenous country and not inevitably need a race war to elminate the "other"). Who do you think would supply the guns? THE WHITE MAN. The White Establishment would just profit off of Minority vs. Minority movements by selling them the weapons, or by supporting certain Minority businesses to pit both ends against the middle and make a profit.


The Establishment can be far more insidious than many of us are aware of. You always have to be one step ahead of "The Man" in thought.
