Is it just me or does anyone else see the rise in the amount of teen mothers we have in this country? I tell you there are about five out of the seven or eight teen girls in my neighborhood who have children or are expecting children. I want to why? I know that even though I'm still a fresh out of high school(so to speak), there weren't that many girls pregnant when I was in high school. Who is to blame for this rise in babies in babies having babies? Is it the parents? The community? The media? Who? Because something needs to be done about it. What do you all think?

With the available information out there and these kids know how to access and have accessed it more than once in their lives, I feel the fault lies with them. We can blame societal, parental and all types of out variables but it all comes down to this: The teens know all about sex, know what happens when you have sex *uprotected/protected* and still went ahead with it anyway. Basically you have two knuckleheads who logically should'nt be allowed to cross the street own thier own let alone procreate.

This maybe true.......but on the flip side, you have adults having unprotected sex all time.....and really, they should know better!!

I think 'one' of the problems, is that parents arent teaching their children when they are young. You cant wait until a child becomes a teenager to talk about sex........and you must train both boys/girls!!

My mom always said, that if she didnt train her children about sex........the streets would.

Hey you! Hope you enjoyed your "special day" *never call, you never write... lol*

I agree that parents have to train kids early, but that training will only go so far. Once the kids become teenagers, they now have the capacity to process information and act upon it. We still have more teens who don't get pregnant/father children than do. That means that there is a smaller segment out there that is surrounded by information and visual examples but will *and I hate this saying* "do me". They don't have the means to raise a child, have no problem foisting the child on thier parents or other adults not to mention the government, and in some cases even go right back out and have more kids. Confused These teenagers can go out and buy a $50 video game and/or a $100 baby phat outfit but if they choose to engage in sex they can't afford a $5 box of condoms or other forms of over the counter birth control? I have teenage cousins who have gotten pregnant/fathered a child and I tell them "You were grown enough to make it, you can be grown enough to raise it" Most of them (not all but most), say constantly, they knew what they were doing was dumb but.....

They always feel the need to add in that "but" in there.... *sigh*
Gambit.....

Thanks!!

My special day was spent doing homework/assignments and sleeping!! Im not sure if youre still out of the country....but i'll PM you to say hi!!

In any case.........i feel you. After parents have done their part....its up to the teenagers, to make wise decisions.

As Faheem mentioned.......the stats shows that teen pregnancy has dropped.

I hope the decline continues.

I pray the decline continues. We as a people don't need any more obstacles. Smile

Out of curiosity, what are the ages of the soon-to-be fathers?

I believe that they are between the ages of 16 and 19, although the oldest is 29 or 30.

Faheem:
I understand that nationally the teenage pregnancy rate may be down, but in my community it has risen too high for comfort. I brought this subject up because I looked around and saw the situation that was going on around me and couldn't help but wonder if it was just bad around my community or if you guys had seen this same thing happening.

Gambit:
I agree that it is the teenagers responsiblity to protect themselves and all that, but I honestly think that a lot of parents are not properly educating their children about sex and it's repercussions. In my high school sex-ed class, sex was made to seem like this forbidden thing that no one was allowed to do because if they did they were guaranteed to get pregnant or get AIDS and die. No where did anyone directly help us understand that if you were going to go ahead and do it then you need to be prepared in every way. my teacher said that it was not thier job to tell us that because our parents should be reponsible enough to talk to us about it. I agree, but then you ask some parents and they say that you should learn about that stuff in sex-ed. so if the parents don't tell them and the schools don't properly prepare them, somebody is and I guarantee you that its going to be the type of person you don't want you child to learn from.

My mom says something similar to that Smile
