DETROIT — Aretha Franklin, the undisputed "Queen of Soul" who sang with matchless style on such classics as "Think," ''I Say a Little Prayer" and her signature song, "Respect," and stood as a cultural icon around the globe, has died at age 76 from advance pancreatic cancer.

Publicist Gwendolyn Quinn tells The Associated Press through a family statement that Franklin passed Thursday at 9:50 a.m. at her home in Detroit. The statement said "Franklin's official cause of death was due to advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin's oncologist, Dr. Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute" in Detroit.

The family added: "In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family."

May she rest in peace.  The woman gave the world personal strength through her brilliant songs  starting with RESPECT.  Then Natural Woman.  After that?  Better Think....and I could go on and on.  She is proof that Africans(Americans) come from the height of royalty and high intelligence SHOWN in all the unprecedent accomplishments achieved sometimes with chains on our identity and our minds.  Regardless we have ALWAYS managed to break through the inhumane bondage of enslavement by allowing our brilliance to shine!!!  Like the sunshine....it cannot be stopped by ANY man or manmade power.  Aretha-like many like her-is PROOF.  Aretha?  You done good girl.  Now go and hang out with the rest of the greats.  And have fun!!!  They've been waiting for you.  But!

Yes, may you rest in peace, Aretha.

Thank you, Aretha, for all the beautiful soulful music and songs that [unlike destructive Rap] spoke to the spirituality and love in African Americans and African America.

Sister Angela Davis was the bomb diggity back in the day and still is, as far as I'm concerned. That goes for all the Panthers, Muhammad Ali, and all the rest whose names I can't rattle off so quickly these days. Believe me, I was right there with them all!!!!! Aretha, the Temps, Marvin Gaye, Prof. Nicki Giovanni, Stokely Carmichael, and all the rest!!!!!! I like Minister Farrakhan too!!! For any white folks I've pissed off by saying that, too bad, so sad!!!!!

You know....I just don't understand.  Not having a will that is.  Cuz she had access to top of the cream attorneys who could help her. But!  Aretha's old school.  She didn't trust too many people.  I mean she used to carry her purse on stage with her and demanded she be paid before she performed.  So that right there tells you a little about her mindset.  I know a lot of folks still putting their money under the mattress or a buried safe.  However, most who don't have a will....usually know that it will go through probate first [depended upon what state].  Maybe that's what she wanted.   And she has children....it will go in chronological order....the first born, the second....etc.  This is after her debts are paid-if in fact she has any.   And because she has living children and they have living children.....the govt won't get any of it.  So Im thinking maybe she planned it this way.....all along.  I could be wrong though.  But!
