If someone ask you, "Are you a Christian?" Chances are your answer would be, "yes! I am a Christian."

Why would you be quick and confident to say that you are a Christian. Is it because you believe in God and Jesus Christ. Muslims believe in God and Jesus Christ but they do not call or see themselves as Christians. Also the devil, his angels and the demons know God and Jesus personally but they are destined to be destroyed.

So back to the question, "Are you a Christian?" By now you have paused to realise that there might be more to being a Christian than just accepting or calling yourself one. A more meaningful answer is to say that you are a Christian because you accept Jesus Christ as your personal saviour. Excellent! But what does it mean to accept Jesus Christ as your personal saviour?

Most people who say the above have no clue what it means to accept Jesus Christ as their personal saviour. They make the statement like a Parrot because they heard it in church, not because they really mean it. It would come as a shock to such ones if you are to tell them that it involves them stopping their present course of life. Repent, which means to turn around and set a new course to their current way of life. Finally one has to dedicate one's whole life to becoming a slave of Jesus Christ. In essence you stop being a slave to the Devil and his world and become a slave of Jesus Christ.

As a slave does not pursue his own interests but looks to his master for direction, so is true of a dedicated Christian. Such a Christian looks to his master's commands and will and OBEYS them. In effect accepting Jesus Christ as your personal saviour means Christianity becomes a way of life to you. You have to live, eat, breath Christianity and actually obey the Bible.

How can you make something you way of life if you do not know what it involves? God has put all his will and purposes for humankind together in the Bible. It's obvious then, that one can not worship God if one does not know the Bible. The scripture says, "this means everlasting life, to know God and the one whom he sent forth, Jesus Christ, John 17:3." Does this mean knowing the Bible will save you. No not exactly! As mentioned earlier the Devil and his Demons know the Bible very well but would not be saved. The Pharisees and scribes in Jesus' time knew the Bible very well but would they be saved? No! Just knowing the Bible is not going to save you.

More is needed than knowledge. Going back to the comparison of a true Christian being like a slave who looks to his master for direction; What does the slave do when he gets this direction from the master? Why! He promptly obeys and puts it into action or practice. The same applies to anyone who claims to have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal saviour. First, you have to know the Bible; Secondly, you have to obey it. You can not say Jesus is your saviour if you do not obey him. So for example, Jesus said, "go out and preach and tell others about him." If you find an excuse not to do so, then forget it, you are not a Christian. You are disobedient, and it's impossible for a disobedient person to be acceptable to God. Luke 6: 46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Also Matt. 15: 7 Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people honoreth me with their lips; But their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men.

In his famous sermon on the mount, Jesus forcefully warned: "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven." - Matthew 7:21.

Notice Jesus' emphasis on doing the will of his father as the criterion for receiving the blessings of God's kingdom. In other words, what may have the appearance of godliness is not necessarily approved by God. In fact, Jesus went on to say: "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." (Matthew 7:22,23) Clearly, the important thing is that we make sure that we understand what the good news of the kingdom really is and then act in harmony with it. - Matthew 7:24,25.

So ask yourself, what makes you think you are Christian. Surely it's not because you go to church. There is nowhere in the Bible where it says because you go to church you will be saved. If your Christianity is not a way of life which means being obedient to God's will and direction in the Bible then according to what God says in the Bible you are wasting your time.
