Re: Black Coalition Announces Gay Marriage Support

ricardomath ·
Here's a profile of a black woman from my wife's country, Colombia, Piedad Córdoba, who is a senator and a human rights activist. She reciently survived an assassination attempt by the rightwing paramilitary death squads, and was kidnapped in 2000 by them for her human right efforts. My wife used to frequently read in the newspaper about massacres of groups of gays in her city by rightwing paramilitary groups when she lived there. It was part of what they call their "social cleansing"...

I didn't forget about them Kweli. My question/concern is how can he even be seriously considered for this position of Chief Justice when there are people who have been sitting on the court who should automatically be considered ahead of him. Secondly, what positions has Alberto Gonzalez held that would qualify him to sit on the Supreme Court? Since that is probably what Bush will do to clinch the Latino vote. Comments

It is not unprecedented that a president should appoint an outsider to the Chief Justice position. The chief justice position is not seniority driven. I believe the last time it was done was with Warren. I read that he was selected to bring a "fresh view to a stagnated court." [The Brethen] While Black folks (and the poor) benefitted from this appointment, this also shows that the such appointments are to spur the dreaded "Judicial activism." Such activism in this case will certain not bold...

Thanks UM for that historical perspective from 2 centuries ago. It's really useful in making the point that people wouldn't have narrowed down the conversation to simply the economic aspects. If 19th century americans talked about the "political-economy", and did not separate the economy from politics, then they most certainly would have included things other than the economy, economists, and economic decisions in the discussion. Cool factoid UM!
