It seems like the answer should be obvious. But there it is, still a question. It is still a question because many of (us) still can be found trying to make 'them' comfortable. Clearly, we have no obligation to do this. And actually, there is no need. All the reasons...wait. I find myself getting exasperated at myself for trying to search for some rationale 'they' might use to explain why meeting their needs is the thing to do. Am I craazy???? What always gets under my skin when black people prattle on like this is how blind or stupid the individual must be. I believe in one since that this is true – on an individual basis. But under the umbrella of racism it's complete bullshit. He did not overcome racism. In an oppressive society, when you belong to the group which is oppressed, YOU do not overcome anything. You are ALLOWED and GIVEN privileges which can easily be taken away. And lets be clear Colin Powell, a Condi Rice, an...

Very reasonable expression! Actually about the "saftey net" thing, one of my cousins is also an atheist, but he believes in reincarnation or subconsciousness (he believes that people either either reincarnate or that after death, people remain in a dream-like subconscious state). It's kind of unusual for an atheist to believe in afterlife, but oh well. *shrugs*

Making them feel comfortable? That's absolutely ridiculous! It's one thing to say that seeing a group of teenagers talking loudly and wearing oversized clothing makes one uncomfortable--I don't like being near any race of teens, as a matter of fact (barely out of my teens years myself, funny enough). But then some people will persist in feeling threatened because you are Black, irregardless of how neatly dressed or well spoken you are. I've experienced situations like this, only with Asians...

I am a weak atheist and an agnostic (no, they're no mutually exclusive), but I practice taoist philosophy. I don't believe there is an onjective meaning to life, but that doesn't mean life itself is meaningless. Rather, it opens the possibility of the individual creating their own purpose, if they so chose. With the knowledge that all we have is the here and now (although religious taoists may believe in reincarnation), the toaist focuses on experiencing the beauty and goodness of the world,...

Hating Black men and holding past relationships against the new relationship prospect are two quite different things. I said what I had to say about baggage in a previous post on this thread; suffice it to say that both men and women have baggage from past relationships and if we're honest, at one time or another, we have all probably given another person some undue grief because we were still reeling from the hurt we experienced in the past. However, most Black women LOVE Black men Maybe we...

Young people make many mistakes. When I was in high school all the guys really went for the homecoming queen/prom queen types. How many of the most popular girls in your high schools are now sitting at home or in some dead end job with way to many kids by a bunch of different guys and/or on drugs? And what about the most popular guys? They are a lot of times, on drugs, in and out of jail, unstable, and that's if they're still alive. CF's attitude towards Black Business dealing with White Business reminds me of Malcolm X's attitude towards White people in a scene of the movie "Malcolm X" with Denzel Washington. Malcolm X (still "Malcolm Little" at the time) was a teenager/young adult working on a train as a waiter having to serve White passengers. He walked around carrying food trays with a big smile on his face calling out what food he was carrying. A White navyman (this was shortly after WWII) asks for some food, and...

Re: Why do souls come to Earth?

Empty Purnata ·
Hmmm...that's probably due to Augustinian influence in Christian thought. Modern Christianity took Augustine's philosophy that the material world is something of a "curse", and that physical bodies are crass and disgusting. Many Christian basically view the body as little more than a prison for an idealized fluffy, wraith-like soul. That's why I find Tantric Buddhist philosophy on the soul so refreshing. It goes beyond this Cartesian Dualism of "body" and "soul", and it describes the body...

Because women think with their vaginas -- that is, they use their awesome sexual power to control, manipulate, and get what they want from men. And men let them get away with it. I don't know if women think with their vaginas but they do know a man's sexual appetite is usually a trillion times hers, so by default she probably has to think with her vagina to have some sort of control. A woman hates a "player" because she has no sexual power over him and cannot manipulate him, yet still finds...

It's not just that poverty exists, its that because America utilized slavery, it denied poor and working class whites the opportunity to feed their families, earn income, and build wealth. Absent slavery there still would have been an American economy. America would have had to pay the poor and working class folks here. The article makes several good points, however, I think it sugarcoats the "baby mama/daddy drama" that affects many of these types of relationships. When a couple have a child, there is an eternal connection. Some biological parents won't speak to the step-parent for any reason and are...
