I'm kinda liking this "takin' it to the streets" thing that I'm seeing going on around the country as of late. And very happy to see that a lot of young people are taking part. Of course, not all (or probably even most) of these groups are promoting issues that I have an interest in! (Which I won't bother name 'cause I'm sure I'd end up offending somebody in the process! ) But, every now and again, I'm seeing a group of us getting riled up about one injustice or another, gettin' a small...

My reading of this story on various news outlets leaves me with an impression of failure. Let me explain why. The "middle class" parents who voted in this new school board to do exactly what they have done, resegreate the schools held no rallies, no marches, no press conferences. No what they did was what? Went to school board meetings, made a decision, and showed up to vote in the people they knew would vote this way. What did black folks do? Nothing. Now our people want to get out in the...

What they're calling "resegregation," sounds to me more like the kids are now going to be just going to schools in their own neighborhoods. Can somebody explain why this is a bad thing? Is it really easier to bus the kids elsewhere than it is to fix the schools black kids go to? I hate hearing people insist that our kids have to be bussed to schools with white kids in order to learn.

Vox, I agree with your sentiment of wanting children to be able to go to school in their own neighborhoods, but I think that this has to be weighed over against issues such as allocation of resources and opportunities. I believe in school choice, but busing is not school choice. It is just throwing children around in order to mix the schools composition up. A better idea is to take the average school funds to a predominately white school and make sure it is equal to the predominately black school. It's interesting. I applaud the young lady for the level of self-examination. The thing is, though, every society has rules and expectations of its members, and every society seeks to "train" its members to become productive parts of it. Even the simplest hunter-gatherer societies -- people who had no conception of something like a "paycheck" -- did it. It's paradoxical that our society is enlightened enough to produce people who are capable of examining and criticizing this reality, yet...

I think black students are interested in black history, but our American experience is not a story of beauty and its not easy to discuss among other ethnic groups and really its kinda recent when you think in terms of the number of lives you are separated from slavery and the living that was raised in segregation and Jim Crow. As ER said, it is not only elementary school where this information is omitted. It is omitted in middle school, high school, and of course in college, unless you take it upon yourself to take an African American/African studies course. Though I’ve never taken an African/African American studies course in college, I would wager that 90% of the most pertinent information is still omitted. Hi sunnubian , I a gree with all you say here. I chose the g rade school because in it there's already a captive audience so to speak. In other words, by law, every AA child must attend the classes set up for him or her there. One advantage is that it would eliminate the need for any of them to seek out such knowledge (libraries, book stores, etc.). Therefore, although it would be difficult, and perhaps impossible, to overcome the opposition to get such a plan implemented, I believe that It...

On the other hand, if we assist in de-funding public schools, where will our children be educated at when they change the game on us? (and they always do). If you don't want to help anyone - then don't - that is your choice. Some want to help because they see a need and it makes them feel good, I have found though that the entities who are most likely to abuse "help" from others are churches (they even threaten you with hell if you don't "work for the Lord" ). Besides, if you are doing it for your own spirit, you will NEVER feel used, abused, etc. It comes back anyway. Mine has come back to me whereby I get a good number of "pay it forward"s.
