Hang in there HB - we are clearly stating our desire for an honest dialogue (if that wasn't clear before) about criteria in choosing a Black man. Yes, we have presented uncomfortable theories & questions. We may get uncomfortable answers & counter-theories, once we actually get some substantive ones. Now the ball is in the ladies' court. Let's see what happens. Maybe a new thread is in order...

And this means that the other parent "complies" with the court order? Just becasue the court says the father has rights to see the child doesn't mean the mother complies no more then when the court orders the father to pay child support that he complies. And it can get expensive taking someone to court all the time to fight for you rights. Any why is that? I don't need to click on every thread to know what to expect. Considering the media already bombards us with images of Black women as sluts and hoes, yes I do find these images offensive, and I do become uncomfortable looking at them. I imagine it's the same feeling that you may get whenever you turn on the news to see yet another Black man being handcuffed and hauled off to jail. My purpose for visiting African-America.org, and other progressive venues, is to get away from these demonizing...

Great post Noah! We don't allow ourselves to see other black people as being "black like us" and vice versa. Often times the majority of our people are suffering from the sames types of issues and don't even know it because there is a certain amount of disconnect. Some of the disconnect is external and some is internal. If we overcome the internal disconnect, we can definitely overcome the external disconnects.

I think that Lincoln gets way to much credit for this. He wrote in a letter, just before the beginning of the Civil War, that his "greatest concern is to save the Union. If I believed that preserving slavery would accomplish that goal, I would do so." The only thing Lincoln deserves credit for is being far sighted enough to realize that if slavery wasn't abolished, the slaves themselves were going to tear his beloved Union down around his ears.---Black Viking I really appreciat your post. Re: What is a Sellout?

Black Viking ·
I agree. This why I never use the term "sell-out". In order to determine that a Black person is a sell out, you first have to define what a Black person should think and do. The problem is that as soon as we do that we buy into to someone else's stereotype of what we are. IMO, using a term like sell-out just undermines a person's individuality in an attempt to feel more authentic ourselves.

________________________________________________ No, it has nothing to do with defining what a Black person should should think or do, but it has more to do with what a Black person should not do to hurt ALL or the majority of Black in the process of doing a particular thing. Just like Honestbrother's mention of a 'racial appeaser' would not fit the description of a sellout, but rather a description of basically merely an ass kisser, because being an ass kisser doesn't always or...

Don't believe that's such a problematic thing. The problem comes in when the range of possibilities, the range of "acceptables" are so broad... no one statement can capture the essence. Now, too often that may be the problem: Trying to give a simple, hard answer to a question that is at least as fluid as it is complex (complex in the sense that it's broad and one almost has to speak in broad generalities in an attempt to arrive at definition). And honest observations would reveal that...

As an anti-fundamentalist, I'll do my best to answer only from my own spiritual perspective. "Should" is an interesting choice of words. God can and does adapt to any or all situations as God chooses, including modernism. Determining whether God should or should not do this is, frankly, putting God in a box. To ask ourselves what God should be doing is to suggest that we might know better than God. This is normal in our society though. We've been questioning God for a long time now. However,...

There are numerous assumptions here that I think should be challenged. 1. There appears to be an assumption here that the past, prior, ancient, or archaic practices, rituals, and writings are truer, more accurate reflections of God. 2. There appears to be an assumption that God or the Divine is immutable or unchanging. In order for me to address this particular question, I would need to have some sense of why these assumptions are not only being held, but are being privileged, because I do...
