I think everyone should be able to BE who they are - unless their behaviour is unacceptable to any part of society. She came to speak at my undergrad school quite a few times but I always missed it. I always say I am going to buckle down and read the coldest winter ever but never get around to it. I grew up hearing about her from an aunt, who back in the day was very pro black and militant. i have seen her speak on tv several times but haven't gotten any of her literature as of yet.

On its face, it doesn't sound like bad advice, but the more I think about it, something is off. The overwhelming sense is "You are not really a part of this family. Be prepared to be bounced out of the picture at whim and get the short end of the stick. And don't gripe about it." Which is somewhat understandable in the beginning, but seems insane for anything that goes beyond a few months. I just don't quite see how that's a healthy situation. MidLifeMan summed up my feelings on this pretty well. I've always been a big fan of moving as slowly as possible in relationships. I especially take my time when it comes to introductions. I was dating my ex-wife for a year and we were engaged for another six months before she even met my parents. No other woman that I have dated has been around long enough to earn the privilege of meeting my family. I'm very careful about the girls that I bring home.

I only have one problem with this. By my understanding, racism is simply a specific form of prejudice. At its core, its no different than classism or sexism.
