No. (but it also depends on where you live whether you may want to take it into account) If I am by myself and not acting the fool then I expect that people around my are not going to feel uncomfortable. Quite frankly if a person is that stupid to show discomfort then rest assured I will use it to my advantage to embarrass them for their ignorance. Well, what does the American Dream mean to you? To most I would think it is a good job, a family, a home, a car. What is wrong with that? Aren't you striving for those things? Don't you want MORE money in your bank account rather than LESS?

Let's not talk about a family (I've had that discussion elsewhere) - but if all we're talking about is material goods: car, money, home, job, etc. then sure this stuff is attainable for many of us. Yes I desire economic security and believe it can be achieved - at least speaking for myself. But is that all people mean when they talk about the American Dream? Aren't there all sorts of other warm fuzzy connotations that attach to the term?

While I do agree that being racist has more to do with the power someone can have over another, I also take into account the fact that I have associates that are latino, asian, and the like, and older family members do make stereotypical cracks about them, which I don't appreciate. In that sense, I would consider them racist remarks.

As for the books, I can vouch for WHY WE CAN'T WAIT. I've had the occasion to re-read/review it over the last few years. IMO, the attraction is rooted in the signifying, displacement, projection or othering that is part of white supremacy. If one sets up these binaries of white/black, good/bad, chase/sexual and libidinous, saintly/sinner one will see this phenomenon of love/hate. Women of color have historically been portrayed as sexual, erotic, alluring, dark and mysterious as well as ugly, undesirable, and repulsive. The "other" both attracts and repells. It fascinates and terrifies.
