American education started to go down hill the very instant they began to run our education systems as a business and education in American was taken out of the control of educators and placed in the hands of politicians and their corporate interests. Netbooks normally come with 160 GigaByte drives. I wonder how many people really understand how big that is? If the software that comes with the system takes up 10 gig then 150 should be free. A 500 page paperback book is about ONE MEGABYTE. So 1000 of those books would be a gigabyte. So 150,000 of those books could be stored on the hard drive. Actually that is wrong because computers use 1024 instead of 1000 but it's close enough. So strictly speaking for less than the price of one...

It's interesting. I applaud the young lady for the level of self-examination. The thing is, though, every society has rules and expectations of its members, and every society seeks to "train" its members to become productive parts of it. Even the simplest hunter-gatherer societies -- people who had no conception of something like a "paycheck" -- did it. It's paradoxical that our society is enlightened enough to produce people who are capable of examining and criticizing this reality, yet...

The way to put a stop to corporations/business/flim-flam artists fleecing students of their Pell Grants and Student Loans, is to make it illegal for any institution to be able to say that it is a "College" or "University" or "School" that is not fully accredited in the first place. Further, there should be a standard set that colleges and universities that receive public funding can charge a student. There should also be a national cross-reference (publicly searchable) data-base that shows...

Sunnubian I'm glad that you mentioned the money issue. White pollsters keep telling us that we have all these billions of dollars, BUT fact is we don't have access to it because most of it is tied up in banks, bills and credit. All of which belong to the white man. At the end of the day we don't actually have the cash or capital on hand to save Morris Brown or any other HBCU if we needed to.

But, if Morris Brown needs $30Million to be saved and there are well over 40Million African Americans, that means each of of giving at least $1.00 would be enough to save the College. I all of us would donate a dollar a year to educational programs and HBCUs, that would be at least $40Million going toward community education programs and the HBCUs annually, and if we would donate a dollar per month . . . (Personally, I know that it's a long shot, but, hey )

When has there ever been and "Educational Initiative" that suggested a National Recommended Reading List? 100 books for kindergarten, 200 books for 1st graders, 300 books for 2nd graders, ... By 12 grade that would still be less than 10,000 books. I am not talking about kids reading all of them I am saying they should have a excellent selection to choose from and not have to wade through garbage. So why haven't we created a Reading List? Why don't we have a table for when children should become familiar with certain ideas? At what age should they know the structure of the atom. When should they know what photosynthesis is? etc. Do we need palefaces to tell us what education is? These cheap computers give us the ability to totally short circuit the paleface controlled educational system. We may just have to pay to get credentials not knowledge. Xum

African America is going to have to see where they stand on this issue. On the one hand, our children would be better off if we could open our own schools in our own communities (and Churches). On the other hand, if we assist in de-funding public schools, where will our children be educated at when they change the game on us? (and they always do). Or, should African Americans fight like hell against this, which is going nationwide, and do whatever it takes to make ALL Public Schools better...
