I am grieved to hear about your experience. I spent 12 years in academia as a college/university chaplain. Before my theological training, however, I obtained a B.S. in physics and mathematics, and an M.A. in physics. So I think that I might be able to relate to your situation from several positions. Yes, I have served in the military- the USArmy to be specific and I was in an infantry unit. These soldiers were doing their duty, and there is no dishonor in that. Who joins the military without considering the possibility of death? Separation from family, death, dismemberment etc are all part and parcel and it's unrealistic for civillians to think that we can be at war and have no deaths. If you have an ax to grind against the president, don't use a dead soldiers picture to gain sympathy...

How unrealistic is it for "civilians" to wish that "everybody could just get along"? All anyone's trying to do is live their lives. Once that "soldier" is laying in his coffin, I would guess he no longer knows about either his belt or any kind of dishonor nor honor nor whether or not his picture is being either displayed or not displayed. I both disagree and I agree. Yes. You interests and your tastes will either limit or enhance your choices. Here's where I agree. I agree that often our tastes can be quite arbitrary and make lousy criteria for choosing a mate. For example, I like Ethiopian food. Thank you, baby... And I wear boxer-briefs, and boxers. I prefer boxer-briefs, especially longer ones that go about halfway down the thigh, because I like the look, and the support. But it's hard to find good ones, so I flesh out my u-wear assortment with boxers. I don't think you're gay if u wear tightie-whities, but I just don't think they look good. It's like wearing knee-high socks, or wearing your pants with the belt line above your belly button. They look kind of nerdy to me.

Frenchy, I asked around last night and the only friend who has been to Italy 'recently' went 4yrs ago. Not much help sorry. He did say yeh, gypsies are an issue in Italy, but more so in France. However, his advice is just have your wits about you and stay street smart, and you should be fine. If you're a New Yorker, then that's probably as street smart as you can get in the west??? I suggest you take and wear a money belt inside your shirt, so you always have access to larger denomination...

I think it's killing black folks. In the sense that so many people are wrapped up in this regressive/backward religion that it's isolating and weakening the more progressive members of the group (I speak from experience being a black University faculty member in the sciences in a Bible Belt state). Has anyone else found this to be the case???? Anyway, there is nothing lonelier. Which is why I find this site so REFRESHING. I find it interesting that many of the American "Founding Fathers"...

A NOTE ON THE GAMEPLAN Here perhaps is my biggest difficulty with black women (coming from the Bible Belt). Us men are supposed to be either up in the church or in the prisons. Either Preachers or Prisoners. But a lot of us professional and single brothers aren't in either of those places. We're living productive lives and we don't identify with the church. In fact, I am vehemently opposed to the religious intolerance that is supported in traditional church environments. The church venue was only meant to be used as an example.

I've obtained a black sash in Hung Gar, and 2nd dan (degree) black belt in Hapkido. I'm currently learning Shotokan and Aikijujitsu (purple belt rank in both). Thanks to my travels I've picked up techniques from Muay Thai, Sambo, Shorin Ryu, and Savate.

I don't believe people take this argument seriously. Americans (blacks in particular) have more religion (especially) Christianity than almost anyone else (Europe for example). So why is it that we also have more social ills? (teen pregnancy, crime and incarceration, etc.)? We (Americans) lead the so called developed (First) world in both religion and social ills. Every sizeable city in a Bible Belt state is a gay mecca. Gays leave all the small towns within a few hundred mile radius to be some place sane. Having lived in Georgia, I can tell you.... Haha, I like that! Anywhoo, I don't know many black people who are too religous, if anything I know way more people who are not religous, cept the older folk. Ilive in Atlanta, I got people in Alabama, however while I don't know many black ppl who are "too religous" you'd be hard pressed to find any who are agnostic, and def not atheist. But, I also don't know many white folk in Alabama who would agnostic/atheist either. (Bible Belt, baby!) So maybe he just can't find someone to share those...
