ISOME, I could swear that the idea of "minority set-asides" were about opportunity and the ability to create jobs and capital via contracts for Black businesses. I agree, this is very scary indeed. As a private entity, there are certainly questions of accountability that arise (stockholders vs citizens, openess of practices and procedures vs. private information and trade secrets, etc.) What about training, what about law enforcement officers representing the communities which they serve? As deputized citizens, must they follow procedures with respect to searches (warrants)? Does Miranda hold for these guys?

When I referred to "everyone" I was specifically referring to those of higher financial means. I meant: This is what happens when everyone but the the poorest move out. If you take any community (white or black, rich, or not so rich) and then drain it of its most outstanding members (outstanding educationally, professionally, financially, etc), then there's going to be a corresponding drop in the quality of life of that community. My goodness... this is a great topic! By the way, I think both Thayfen and Rowe are right. But I think Thayfen's statement is perhaps more true (when applied to whites) of baby boomers. Younger white boomers and the generation that followed seem very liberal in child rearing. I'll share some of my own experiences. Good for you! Whew. Reading these old posts is like going back in time. I saw so many typos and mistakes in grammar in my statement that its embarressing (I had to go back and do a lot of editing). Djon, here is an interesting article on the scyrocketing incarceration rate of bw. black women have had a 700% increase in incarceration while black men have had a 150% increase. what really gets me is that no one talks about how fast black women are being imprisoned.
