I think this is a very large part of it.

Many of the nations of Africa are bound by lines drawn by Europeans. Those lines were, in many cases, drawn to foster confusion and discontent clearly.

That is a staple of colonialism.

I try not to think of this too much, because it is still being exploited while the Europeans still profess 'clean hands'.

I also know that the people are 'free agents' who could effect change.
