Yes, you are correct. This was particularly true of the Reformed Christian traditions. It is often translated as subdue or have dominion over the earth.
As Max Weber would argue, the link between religion and capitalism had a profound effect on society. There is also the sense that this world is not the "real world" or my final destination. This eschatological or even more drastic apocalyptic notion has it that this world is going to pass away. It is temporary, expendable. We should be looking forward to the New Heaven and the New Earth.
