Poverty is bigger than AIDS; it definately has spread AIDS. It has helped to spread many other infections including malaria, including diseases, like Polio,measles, etc.{believe me, the list goes on and on} which still exist in impoverished countries because of a lack of childhood immunizations{ i couldn't believe the mumber of children and adults that i saw on cruches-- because of Polio- while visiting several of these countries}. All diseases thrive in immunosuppressed hosts. Poverty disallows healthcare in most countries{other than Cuba; but, that's another story}, and without proper preventative medicine, disease spreads. Now, the answer to the question "would AIDS be ...cut in half" is yes. Because, AIDS is not defined as HIV positive; rather, it is a constellation of symptoms that occur after HIV has run amuck. Also,if everyone were well fortified and used condoms than the projected number of future cases would be halved and DEFINATELY those suffering now would improve if pharmaceutical companies allowed AIDS meds to be
given to those folks who can't afford them. If the majority of people with HIV had access to the current AIDS meds, their lives would be significantly improved and they could boast the 20 plus year survival that we see here. Anyway, I completely agree that it is within our power to end poverty if the world-- or even the US-- decided to do so { did anyone else notice that the US did not yet send representation to the global conference on economic development being held in Johannesburg?};but, then if we did end poverty, we still would have to deal with global warming { tee-hee}
