It seems like to win the White House, Democrats must run a moderate Southerner who can deliver against the moral issues that are so important throughout the South these days.
Hmmmm . . . who could fit that bill? Well, none other than Al Gore who, despite the fact that he didn't win his state in his presidential run, is from Tennessee and has a wife (Tipper) who has a long and deep record of attempting to cure America of its immorality - particularly through music. Based upon current politics, I wonder if Al Gore will enjoy a resurgence that might sweep him into the White House in 2008.
Maybe Gore will have the last laugh after all!
John Edwards not only fits most of your description (moderate white southern male), but he's also a much better candidate, and lacks many of Gore's weaknesses.
I'm not convinced that "morality" is the issue people claim it to be. But I do think that Democrats need - for practical purposes - to drop the gay marriage issue in 2008 and focus on "bread 'n butter" morality: jobs, education, and war.
