The issue is people being incarcerated unjustly WHY do we care how much they are paying for phone calls?? Damn I couldn't care less! Free the unjustly convicted!
I understand your point Yemaya, however, what you may not be considering is the fact that people cannot assist in their own defense or be properly defended from behind bars, especially when they cannot afford to make the appropriate phone calls or the number of phone calls needed to be made.
But, even those rightfully convicted should not be alienated from their family, children and loved ones. The more isolated inmates are from their family, the more institutionalized and indoctrinated they become, making them even more likely to not be rehabilitated and making them even more vulnerable to being even further exploited in prison.
We have to remember that the vast majority of African Americans in prison are young and immature and that the vast majority are non-violent offenders. We also have to remember the environment was strategically and deliberately created to produce the live bodies needed to fill the Prison Industrial Complex Industry "orders" in the first place.
