Reply to "Before There Were Panthers: Deacons For Defense"

If you search for 'Deacons For Defense' on google.com, you will come across the official FOIA FBI file on this group from the 1960's. Now remember that these FOIA files have several blacked out areas. I've read files similar to these at a home of a former president who J. Edgar Hoover served under. One of the first files that I picked up was about the information about the organization of black laborers from a tipster in a beauty shop. Back in those days, there was many anti-union forces in the government, but they were especially hard on blacks. A. Philip Randolph was mentioned in this document.
Anyway, enjoy the file if you choose to look it up.

Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society
