So, did I read that right: The grandmother agreed to press charges because he stole her car (I presume the sister who was riding in it with him had no knowledge of his theft)?

I took my parents car at 15 y/o and went joyriding and got into other trouble, too. Purely adolescent angst, no law enforcement involved, but trouble nonetheless.

This is yet another tragedy that can't be explained away.
